I never saw it as it giving them the safety to experiment, so much as it is just another way of painting being gay as some kind of joke. Imagine if they were playing straight chicken, it would be seen as ridiculous because that what you are "supposed" to do.
Though if I were playing straight chicken, I would save myself and the girl the time and just wear my chicken label with pride.
