POP CULTURE: Top 10 Movies of All Time

Using the same rubric to judge if I like a movie -- repeat watchability + it has to have "stuck with me" in some way -- here is the follow up to the previous blog and my favorite movies of all time...

1) Incredibles (2004) -- In short, one of my favorite movies of all time. I love cartoons, and I love superheroes. I watched this, also, first with a client and have loved it ever since. My former roommate and I bonded over it, as well. We are oft to quote Edna Mode as many times as possible in any conversation.

2) Hairspray (2007) -- Is anyone really surprised? I don't think I have to talk about it anymore than I already have. But it still makes me smile everytime I watch it.

3) Clueless (1995) -- You are not allowed to laugh. This "simple little teen movie" is actually quite intelligent and well done. Besides, ultimately, it's one of the few movies that I can pop in a watch again and again. I think that highly of it.

4) Velvet Goldmine (1998) -- This might have been able to appear on the "gay" list. It's a movie about the glam rock scene of the 1970s. Again, I love Toni Collette, but it also has Ewan McGregor (naked), Christian Bale (partially naked), and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (mostly naked). The music is amazing and the setting/costumes/general look is beautiful. I was introduced to it by a friend of mine in high school and I have watched it ever since. Also one of the first DVDs I ever bought.

5) Edward Scissorhands (1990) -- The first movie I watched when I identified a very specific artistic style -- Tim Burton's. Clearly, I had seen lots of his movies before (Batman, Beetlejuice, etc.), but when I put the pieces together and started getting into him this was the first movie I went to see specifically for the director. I was not disappointed, and the bizarre modern fairy tale left me breathless. The scene with Winona Ryder dancing in the "snow" and then her asking him to hold her (towhit he responds "I can't") are just amazing. However, it's clear that he was just beginning to define himself as a director in this one.

6) Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) -- Love, love, love this movie. Also a Tim Burton movie. Um. Don't know what to say except I remember seeing the previews when I was little and thinking "WTF," and seeing it much much later and really enjoying it.

7) Willow (1988) -- Favorite fantasy movie of all time. It's always fun to meet another person who really likes this movie and you inevitably get the shrill "Change me back, Willow!" conversation.

8) Steel Magnolias (1989) Could, also, arguably, end up on the gay list. These are these women at their best. Sally Fields was unbelievable, as was Dolly Parton. Always watch it when it's on television -- it sucks me in for the two hours its on. Just a great movie, and it always makes me cry.

9) Labyrinth (1986) and The Dark Crystal (1982) -- Jim Henson movies. I love them both and watch them with fair to moderate regularity. My mother introduced all of us to the Dark Crystal, while Bagel brought me Labyrinth. These are just movies you watch and remember how cool they were when you were kids. Sidenotes:

9a) Seriously, David Bowie is fucking awesome in Labyrinth, and this movie introduced us all to Jennifer Connelly who is beautiful and amazingly talented (and is on my list of "women to fuck if I ever got the chance").

9b) The Skeksis, to this day, give me nightmares from the Dark Crystal.

10) As Good As it Gets (1997) -- I love Helen Hunt. I don't know what else to tell you.

And the honorable mention over here goes to...

11) Requiem for a Dream (2000) -- Best way I've ever heard it described: About four people hitting rock bottom and proceeding to dig. The only reason it didn't make the official list was because I definitely can't watch it over and over again. It's something that you have to be in a very sppecific state of mind to watch... and you can't be under the influence of anything.

GAY STUFF: Top 10 LGBT Movies

On the back of both Darren and Juliet & Juliette posting blogs about their favorite movies, I thought I'd follow suit...

These two lists were extraordinarily hard to come up with. Mainly because, when asked, it's hard to really think of any movies at all. So, we used the idea of "movies that stuck with me." I'm not saying these are the most incredible movies of all times, but they are movies that have left me with something, or are movies that I can watch over and over and over again. I'll note some obvious missing pics on both lists.

Also, neither of them are in any particular order.

Top Ten LGBT Films of All Time

1) Happy Together (1997, Japan)-- This was the first strictly gay movie I had ever seen, and I picked it up randomly from the "return" bin while I worked at the library at Miami. The reason it stuck with me so long is because it was the first time I had ever seen anal sex handled in a relationship on a film and they made it looked... well, almost natural. I thought that was neat.

2) Better than Chocolate (1999, Canada)-- The only lesbian-exclusive film on the list. It's cute, it's fun, and I love the basis for the title in the movie (ie, orgasms are better than chocolate). It's a cutesy little film from Canada, but it talks about some interesting and strange issues, including censorship and trans-relationships.

3) The Broken Hearts Club (2000, USA) -- It's a really really cute movie, and really sweet and I make recommendations to a lot of straight friends to watch it because I think it talks about the whole "newbie" syndrome quite effectively. It's a little foray in the 20-something gay adolescence we get to go through, and you'll notice (if you know me) that I get a lot of my "gay lingo" from this movie. And there are two great quotes that have stuck with me:

A lot of people ask me when I first knew I was gay. Fact is, I don't know. But what I do remember, what I can recall, is when I first realized it was Okay: It was when I met these guys. My friends.

Everyone can't be straight. Everyone can't be beautiful. Everyone can't be the same, Patrick. Some people are just gay and average. We're the strongest I think

Besides, it has a line-up of characters that you'll spend you're time going -- I know that actor. What's funny is, if you're gay, you'll spend your time going -- I know that guy.

4) The Birdcage (1996, USA) -- I just always have to watch it when its on. I also once had a client who would sit and watch it with me every time we heard it was coming on TV. I really enjoyed watching it with him. It's cute, it's funny... but it also has a lot of really special memories for me.

5) To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995, USA) -- Patrick Swayze, John Leguizamo, and Wesley Snipes in drag... how could you go wrong??? Besides, with lines like "I got more legs than a bucket of chicken," this was destined to be a campy classic.

6) Connie and Carla (2004, USA) -- I watch this movie over and over and over again. I've nearly destroyed the CD. It's not quite the drag classic that, say, To Wong Foo or Priscilla, Queen of the Desert are, but it's still wonderful. And I love Toni Colette. End of story.

7) But I'm a Cheerleader (1999, USA) -- This was fresh in people's mind when I went to college, and it's one of the first DVD's I bought. It's really sweet and ultimately campy as hell. RuPaul out of drag -- that's funny. Sweet little love story, and it's done in an appropriately bizarre way.

8) Unveiled (2005, France) -- Ironically, I saw this at Outreels, our now-defunct LGBT movie festival. It's beautifully done, extraordinarily poignant, and I'm not sure why I liked it as much as I did. I will say that I left the movie theatre feeling uplifted by the whole showing, and it made me very happy to have watched it.

9) Camp (2003, USA) -- Don't laugh at me. This turned out to be an amazingly on-point movie about kids at a theatre camp. The music is excellent, the cast handles everything with grace, and, even though there are moments where you're like "jesus, these low-budget indie films," you got to hand it to them to make such a great, watchable movie from almost nothing. And to have it so widely watched with almost no publicity.

10) I'm throwing three down for the last one because they are all short documentaries:

10a) Meth: The Movie (2006, USA by Todd Ahlberg) -- About meth and gay men. I still reference a line to people who seek a geographical cure to their addiction from this movie: "I landed in Miami to get off the meth... you know, as soon as I used up everything I had on me."
10b) Hooked (2003, USA by Todd Ahlberg) -- About gay men and online hooking up. I had forgotten about this one when I made this list, but it does well talking about the subject matter.
10c) The Gift (2003, USA by Louise Hogarth) -- About gay men actively seeking HIV infection. The director handles the topic matter amazingly well. It is worth a watch.

And I do want to give an honorable mention to...

11) Trick (1999, USA) -- People are going to laugh at me for putting this on the list, mainly because it's usually listed as "typical gay movie" more often than not. And it is. But it's its typicalness that makes it excellent and makes it interesting to watch. And the whole monologue by Tori Spelling in it was darling. Besides, I watch it over and over and over again.

There are clearly some things left off that people are going to go WTF on: And the Band Played On (it translated poorly from book to movie), Philadelphia (I've never seen the whole thing, and I don't know if I'm interested enough to), Priscilla, Queen of the Desert(loved it, but it's not in my "favorites" list), Rocky Horror Picture Show(I can't watch it over and over -- I can only really watch it when you're in the theater), Eating Out(despite having hot naked guys, it didn't have the same ring to me as Trick did), Trembling Before G-d(great documentary, but didn't leave me the same way some of the others did... more of "oh, this is interesting" as opposed to "WOW"), Small Town Gay Bar(shockingly, never seen it), Boys Don't Cry(I had the opportunity to buy it for like $7 and didn't -- that should tell you something), and Angels in America(don't crucify me when I tell you I have never seen it).

MIAMI UNIVERSITY: Green Beer Day '08

Does anyone besides me randomly google their name to find out what's being written about them? LOL -- Well, I do, and I found something new...

Colorful alcohol was the drink of choice as hundreds of students celebrated Green Beer Day in Oxford March 13.

Students, alumni and community members turned out in droves for an early dose of St. Patrick's Day revelry, four days before the actual holiday.

Extras Kurt Hummel and Barry Floore, Miami University alumni, returned to Oxford to take part in the popular celebration.

"I came here directly after working third shift in Cincinnati," Floore said. "My plan is to enjoy the morning here and be back home early enough to get some sleep before work."

I forgot being interviewed by the Oxford Journal News that day... So, just to check up, my name pops up three primary things: Boy Scouts, sex, and alcohol. Sounds about right.

Just an FYI this is what my friend and I (that's KH that I sometimes refer to) looked like that AM at 6:45am... drinking green beer...

GAY STUFF: Prop 8 in California

I haven't talked much about it, but I watned to clarify that this blog is decidedly anti-Proposition 8 in California.

Proposition 8 is a vote that is going on the November ballot that, if it succeeds, will stop equal marriage in California (recently approved by the Supreme Court of that state). There's lots of great stuff going on out there about this, including massive donations for and against it.

It's funny because I was reading stuff today and, for some reason, I had never quite connected why this was such a big deal. Duh:

If Proposition 8, it will be voters uniformly deciding that gay marriage is OK

Which is no small feat.

So we'll be adding Equality California's California Ripple Effect Blog to the blogroll to keep updated and I'm working on finding an image that y'all can post on your site.

For now, this is all I have, and I don't think it's all that great:

Some newsstories about it from the past few weeks:

Attempt to change the language fails, leaving in the language that voting yes "eliminates the right of same-sex people to marry."

The Democratic National Committee gives $25,000 to beat Prop 8. (ie, my party putting their money where their mouth is)

The opposition starts working -- creation of ProtectMarriage.com.

Even if Prop 8 passes, existing gay marriages would still be legal -- opening the door for possible future challenges.

Anyways, we'll keep watching!!!

BLOGGING: Why people visit

It's true, kids, my readership has more than doubled this month.

However, it is overwhelmingly due to the pictures of men in Speedo's (specifically, Michael Phelps). When you search for "Speedo's" in google images, my blog pops up first.

*sigh* I keep thinking people care. They don't :-).

We'll probably hit 10,000 visitors since the site meter was installed by the end of August/middle of September.

ELECTION 2008: Oh, Johnny!!!!

Apparently, McCain will pick a pro-choice VP, but not a pro-gay one... or "pro... er, lots of other things." Seriously? I feel like we're going to look back, like we do with John Kerry and go, SERIOUSLY??? I think I'm more offended by his inability to speak than I am by what he's saying.

mean we exclude people from our party that are pro-choice. We just have
a--albeit strong--but just it's a disagreement. And I think Ridge is a great

OHIO/CINNKY: Ohioans for Financial Freedom

Apparently, there is no YouTube of this new annoying political ad.

Here's the rundown: in June, the House, Senate, and the Governor put into effect a law that cracked down on the predatory lending of... drum roll please... check cashing establishments (part of HB 545). Most people know what these are (Check into cash anyone?), and I remember distinctly a conversation with my little cousin once about how they were the harbringers of "bad people" into his quaint little suburban Louisville neighborhood. (Teased it out, "bad people" = "poor" or "black" people.)

Now, the group Ohioans for Financial Freedom are desperately seeking the 230,000+ signatures necessary by Sept. 1 to put this up to a November vote... and by doing so putting out some really really bad and clearly biased ads.

Check here, because I am sure glad I wasn't the only one who noticed the weirdness of a farmer talking about needed to be tided over "just until payday."

Now, before my Republican friends scream about how this is incurring on the rights of businesses to do as they please, here is what the new law did:

-capped the interest rate from 391% to 25% (if you watch the video on the website above the $15 on $100 is the 391% rate on a two-week loan of $100... but that's not considering the fees that come with starting an account at one of these places)
-limit consumer borrowing at these locations -- max $500 a time, four times a year (so you don't cycle the debt)
-extends the loan term from two weeks to 31 days

Doesn't sound that unreasonable, know? In fact, I wish someone would have protected me against myself when it came to loans and debt... I would have greatly benefitted from some better caps on my credit cards :-).

Or, you know, learning that you can, in fact, keep spending on your card for weeks and months after it's already overdrawn.

GAY STUFF: Straight Male Crushes

Has anyone else ever had the feeling a straight man has a "crush" on them... I think it's completely possible for straight men to totally dig a gay man in a way they don't understand.

I think there's at least one straight guy in my life -- whose sexuality I do not doubt -- that has a total crush on me.

GENERAL STUFF: Olympics!!!!!

The Olympics are up and running -- YEA!!! :-) Well, sort of. I'm just not as excited as I usually am about this kind of stuff, although I've gotten to watch some fun "off" games while being awake in the middle of the day.

For example, I got to watch the Americans sweep the women's fencing medals. I also got to see a little Equestrian, VERY little Gymnastics, Handball, Water Polo, and Weightlifting (including an attempt by Zhang Xiangxiang to break the world record -- though he failed). I also watched the South Korean team beat Italy in archery... it must suck for Italy to have broken a world record for scores (224, Italy's score was 225), and still come in second (South Korea got 227).

Congratulations to Michale Phelps -- blah blah blah. I'll say it: he's got a rocking body, and I would surely not turn him away in bed, but he's just not that cute. And those long pants Speedos? BLEH!!!! I can't see anything, though his cute little Olympic tattoo is endearing. For those who have lived under a ROCK... Michael Phelps has become the most winningest Olympian ever with 11 gold medals in his life time.

And I'm posting some swimmer's pictures below so that maybe all the people searching for "Speedo's" and finding my page will have an updated post to check out.

I would be curious to know what was the highest winning percentage based on team size that came to the whole shebang. China fielded over 600 athletes, while the US fielded just under 600. Germany? Is it more notable then for, say, Azerbaijan who fielded 39 candidates but have already won 3 medals than for the larger, more losing teams like the USA or China?

Blah. I'll figure it out later.

Oh, and the team from Georgia is pressing to leave so that they can go fight with their countrymen. Interesting.

Quick fun note: Georgia was actually not on this list when I wrote this at 6:50am... they won today!!! GOOD FOR THEM!!! HELL YEA UNDERDOGS!

ELECTION 2008: Finally! An update!!!!

John Edwards, John Edwards, John Edwards. It makes me sad, but it happened. I don't think, however, it will play that well in the general election, but it certainly bars him from the Convention (I believe it has been confirmed that neither him nor his wife will be speaking -- anyone surprised???). However, we've seen this whole "stand by your man" routine before (speaking of E. Edwards); is Elizabeth Edwards thinking about politics in the future??? Well timed, too, btw, John Edwards... on the first day of the Olympics. And right before an invasion. Easily buried story.

There's a sad rhetoric that major female voices in American politics -- or at least the celebrity female voices -- are wives of male politicians. Ahem -- Liddy Dole and Hillary Clinton. I will say this right now: I would die to see a Dole-Clinton fight again, but this time with the wives. I really believe, in this one, Dole will win.

So Obama is slipping a little in all the polls. It's August. The election is boring right now, nothing is going on, though the Georgia-Russia situation is definitely an interesting test for both of them. Like most of the world -- and President Bush -- Obama called on Russia and Georgia to accept ceasefires, and supported Georgia and blasted Russia's militarism. McCain, meanwhile, supports Russia's decision. Interesting. Forecast of things to come??? Oh, and, apparently, McCain has said that it would be wise to expell Russia from the G8.... riiiiiight. Is there some giant plot on the part of the Republicans to make him seem as folksy as our current President???

The Convention is shaking up -- FINALLY!!! :-) And Hillary supporters seem to be planning some sort of march on the Convention??? That's silly. One thing to the PUMA (party unity my ass) voters: COME ON!!!! :-) Hillary, though not encouraging the situation, doesn't seem to be helping it either. Although I can't fault her for simply acknowledging that there are a lot of REALLY REALLY pro-Clinton supporters still out there, and that they want to be heard at the Convention. Simple solution: take it to a real floor vote, leave them both in the kitty, and have it ultimately said: BARACK WON. Period, end of story. She's a prime-time speaker, so the country will still hear her. But Tim sent me an interesting Op-Ed piece in the NYT about HRC:

While Obama was spending three hours watching “The Dark Knight” five time zones away, and going to a fund-raiser featuring “Aloha attire” and Hawaiian pupus, Hillary was busy planning her convention.

You can almost hear her mind whirring: She’s amazed at how easy it was to snatch Denver away from the Obama saps. Like taking candy from a baby, except Beanpole Guy doesn’t eat candy. In just a couple of weeks, Bill and Hill were able to drag No Drama Obama into a swamp of Clinton drama.

As for the VEEPSTAKES... I want to say this right now: I have four major people I'm rooting for. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas (she's a lot like Clinton, but less dirty), Evan Bayh of Indiana (it would solidify the midwest for Obama and he's really cool), Hillary Clinton (duh, but I don't think this will happen), and Bill Richardson (though I really doubt this will happen). In all likelihood, Obama will probably pick up Kaine from Virginia, though I think the far wiser decision is Bayh. Can we have two people with funny names on the ballot though (Obama-Bayh... Barack-Evan...), especially when McCain-Romney sounds so presidential???

The big switch here comes from Ohio and Virginia "leaning McCain" according to the polls. That's unfortunate. Probably the more disturbing thing that comes along is his new feature -- This Day in 2004 -- which confirms that Kerry was still ahead 307-231 around this time four years ago. The conservative pundits like to point this fact out, except they leave out one major issue: Barack is not John Kerry. Kerry was barely understandable when he spoke, and he had that whole Vietnam War thing going on that, in retrospect, actually hurt him quite a bit. Obama is different.

Finally! Found a biased site for the Democrats. We had ColdHeartedTruth for the Republicans... this one, I think, will balance it all out! :-) The other two sites which state their political affiliation -- ElectionProjection and Electoral-Vote -- are so mathematical in nature that I don't believe that they are biased. In this particular circumstance, DemConWatch is the biggest Obama win, while ColdHeartedTruth is his smallest win. Is anyone surprised????

I'm still looking for a good follow-up to the Don't Ask, Don't Tell hearings that happened in the House about two weeks ago, but I haven't really found one yet, though there's an excellent article over at the Moderate Voice talking about the situation and taking a (shockingly) moderate viewpoint about it.

There are two great loves in my life. Sports and Movies. I can always depend on them. They're always there for me, providing comfort, amusement and occasionally enlightenment. I've gotten far more bang for my buck from sports and movies than from any romantic relationship I've ever had (which says everything about me rather than the genuinely good men I've dated). For better or for worse I'd rather spend my nights either at home watching ESPN...or at the cineplex watching anything (well...almost anything; you still couldn't drag me to a movie starring Adam Sandler or Steven Seagal). But give me a cherry ICEE, a box of Milk Duds and a decent flick...and I'm in paradise. (full posting here)

How many orgasims is too many? Wow, I almost said that without laughing. Of course you can never have too many orgasms! There are so many benefits to having orgasms, besides the fact that they feel good and its fun getting there!

My car died over three months ago. Lacking any sort of financial plan, I was forced to take to the busses.

I became a Metro rider.

At the time -- to give you a clue of how much has changed in the last three months -- gas was expensive when it was over $3. Though the price was still high, it was still within the upper limits of my budget.

POLITICS: The end is nigh?

Again, the Balkans provide a great opportunity for the world to explode. The whole Georgia-Russia war looks dangerous and scary. JereKeys has a great run down on just how scary -- in fact, I wish I hadn't read that post because it terrified me more.

But I reported on this before around the time Kosovo demanded its independence.

That's South Ossetia, btw. Georgia is about the size of West Virginia, btw... and South Ossetia -- about the size of Rhode Island.

Seems silly to end the world over.
