Gay History: June 30, 1979

Thanks to the Dean of Cincinnati from the Cincinnati Beacon for the heads up on Facebook on this, the original wording coming from the Examiner, though I can't find other sources to confirm. On June 30, 1979:
A group of 40 people in Cincinnati Ohio who had reserved a city park pool for a gay pride party were outnumbered and attacked by local residents who threw rocks and bottles at them. Police arrived, watched for a while and then drove away. One man had to be rescued by a television news crew. Police refused to return, even after several calls reporting a riot.
I have a feeling at least one of my readers will be able to confirm this, or know someone who can confirm this so we can get an interview and learn more about the incident???

Stonewall Anniversary

'We are the Stonewall girls
We wear our hair in curls
We wear no underwear
We show our pubic hair...
We wear our dungarees
Above our nelly knees!'

June 28th, 1969, 1:20am

Per Allen Ginsberg:
You know, the guys there were so beautiful—they've lost that wounded look that fags all had 10 years ago
Happy 40th anniversary, queer rights movement.

Oh and someone said it on Twitter the other day: Why do I feel like Stephen Colbert educated more of America on Stonewall the entirety of the American public education system?

We're here, we're queer, you'll get to us eventually. Priceless. BTW, did you happen to catch the study where both conservatives and liberals enjoy the Colbert Report because they perceive that he is on their side? Seriously, folks.

And don't forget to check out Wolfie at Back2Stonewall.com's article he reposted that originally appeared in CityBeat, this time unedited. You know, that boy isn't such a bad writer. :-)

National News: Kameny, ENDA, EHDLA

What a fabulous day it was yesterday for LGBTQ equality. Well, sort of, if only we can get the Matthew Shepard Act to move... or only if we could get rid of Don't Ask, Don't Tell... or only if... blah blah blah. You get the point.

  • Frank Kameny is no longer unfit for unemployment by the Federal Government. Kameny is, truly, one of the pioneers for queer rights in this country having taken his firing from the Civil Service Commission over 50 years ago and challenging it, loudly, proudly, and without apology. HE would go on to coin the phrase "gay is good" (as a response to the "black is beautiful" movement). Today, the Office of Personnell Management, formerly the CSC, officially honored him. Neat.
  • ENDA -- the Employment Non-Discrimination Act -- was introduced in the House of Representatives! Unlike in years past, ENDA is gender inclusive in its language. In 2007, some of you remember, the language was stricken at the suggestion of Barney Frank (D-MA) and the new bill -- only protecting sexual orientation -- was then endorsed by the HRC, which could probably be chalked up as one of the worst PR moves of all time. It passed the House, died in the Senate, and then-President Bush said he would veto it. Hrm. Already, HR 2981 has 10 cosponsors. Also, if you check out the Wikipedia article on ENDA, it has a great timeline that summarizes the history of the bill well (seriously, what was life like before Wikipedia?). In related news, Bil at Bilerico is -- justifiably -- aghast at Indiana Equality's decision not to support ENDA because: "ENDA doesn't make us equal - rather, it creates a new form of segregation. It does not provide protections in housing and public accommodations. There are no protections for LGBT children in the public schools where administrators continue to turn a blind eye to harassment and brutality. With ENDA, we are only marginally protected in the workplace." You know, it's a good point, actually. But, really, we're already pissed about everything else, why be pissed about progress? Of course, that's what I said in 2007 about a non-gender inclusive ENDA. Hrm.
  • The Ending Health Disparities for LGBT Americans Act (EHDLA) was introduced by Tammy Baldwin! This bill is a bit of a sleeper and one I didn't even realize was being tossed around. 365gay.com reports the bill will do the following: "In addition to investing in data collection and research, the bill establishes non-discrimination policies for all federal health programs, provides funding for cultural competence training for health care providers, extends Medicare benefits to same-sex domestic partners, creates a new office of LGBT Health within in the Department of Health and Human Services, and provides funding for community health centers who serve the LGBT community." In short: it will start protecting the health interests of LGBTQ Americans. Fabulous. It is HR 3001 and currently has 7 cosponsors.

Isn't this fun, now, kids? Stuff is getting done, and quickly again. Apparently yelling and screaming worked, although I have a suspicion the ongoing drama over LGBTQ individuals pulling out of the DNC fundraiser in protest of inaction had more to do with it. A friend of mine -- was it JereKeys? yea, I believe so -- suggested that the reason going is so slow on a lot of these is because, so long as there is more to do, then the Democrats can continue to dangle the metaphorical carrot of equal rights and raise some serious cash.

They understand, I think, that the Republicans, if all other things were equal, would likely be the party of establishment queers if the GOP was better on our issues.

White Night Riots Remembered

Unbelievable footage of the White Night Riots on May 21, 1979.

The White Night Riots were a series of violent events sparked by an announcement of the lenient sentencing of Dan White, for the assassinations of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Harvey Milk. The events took place on the night of May 21, 1979 in San Francisco.

LGBTQ San Franciscoians had a long-standing conflict with the police department. The struggle against the SFPD turned violent when White, who was himself a former policeman, was given the lightest possible sentence for the assassinations. This became known as "The Twinkie Defense" that contributed to the lighter sentence. Initial demonstrations took place at San Francisco's City Hall after the verdict of voluntary manslaughter was announced. The riots caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage. We...were...angry!!!

Later that night, police made a retaliatory raid on a bar in the Castro District. Many patrons were severely beaten by police in full riot gear. Two dozen arrests were made, and several lawsuits were filed against the San Francisco Police Department. The show of strength that we led increased political power, which culminated in the re-election of Mayor Dianne Feinstein the following November. In response to a campaign promise, Feinstein appointed a pro-gay Chief of Police, which increased recruitment of gays in the police force and eased tensions.

KNOW YOUR HISTORY!

UK Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy

"I’m not a lesbian poet, whatever that is. If I am a lesbian icon and a role model, that’s great, but if it is a word that is used to reduce me, then you have to ask why someone would want to reduce me? I never think about it. I don’t care about it. I define myself as a poet and as a mother – that’s all."
Meet the UK's new poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, apparently considered one of the most widely read contemporary poets in the English language. She also happens to be lesbian. Duffy was nominated for the position in 1999 but Blair didn't think a "homosexual poet laureate" would play well in middle England. She also happens to be the first female poet laureate of the UK.

A piece of her work, called "Talent:"
This is the word tightrope. Now imagine
a man, inching across it in the space
between our thoughts. He holds our breath.

There is no word net.

You want him to fall, don't you?
I guessed as much; he teeters but succeeds.
The word applause is written all over him.

UK's LGBT History Month!

For my UK readers -- and I know of at least one -- Happy LGBT History Month! (We did it back in October.)

There seems to be a whole month of events -- honestly, I wish this would have been this big over here :-(.

National Drag History Month

For the first time ever, LOGO (you know, that gay TV station we still don't have on Cincinnati's Time Warner) brings us...

...honoring those sisters that changed our world and led our movement and bring us joy and love and alcohol.

To all of my sisters in drag, and to all those who came before, we honor you.

From NewNowNext:
Drag queens everywhere, REJOICE! Stand a little taller in your pumps, high atop that plywood-covered pool table! As the delicious Varla Jean Merman is proud to announce today, "January is National Drag History Month!"

Yes, children... Finally, all of those pioneering trans-tastic visionaries who've fought to entertain, enlighten and educate us for decades are getting their due! Think of the societal and cultural strides made by queens at Stonewall, at pride marches and on stages around the world. And trust: Whenever there's a cause that affects the queer community, drag queens and kings have led the charge on our behalf!

LGBT HISTORY: Harvey Milk Murder Date

So Joe.My.God. clued me into this video, but it wasn't the video that caught my eye...

It was the statement by No on 8 that it is being released statewide on the 30th anniversary of Supervisor Harvey Milk's and Mayor George Moscone's murder in San Francisco. It was released on October 27, 2008.

Well, many appreciations to No on Prop 8 for all the hardwork they are doing to defeat Proposition 8 in California, but your history is a little wrong.

Harvey Milk and George Moscone were murdered on November 27, 1978.

For those who don't know, Harvey Milk was the first openly gay or lesbian person elected to (major) public office in the US, and was recently named as one of the 100 most influential people of the century by Time Magazine. Mayor Moscone was a close friend and supporter of Milk and his views on equality. There are some reports of backroom deals, but the long and the short of it came down to this: Dan White, another Supervisor in SF, became frustrated with the Moscone-Milk friendship and decided to kill them both. Fun fun fun. White later got a lighter sentence after his lawyers made the now infamous Twinkie defense -- that twinkies, coca-cola, and depression caused violent mood swings and meant that he could not have been guilty of premeditation.

Anyways, Wikipedia is a great source of information on both Milk and Moscone (and White).

California recently tried to pass an annual holiday -- Harvey Milk Day on May 22 -- in honor of his place in gay history (it would be the only annual holiday that honors a person for their contributions to the LGBT rights movement, by the way), but the Governator vetoed it.

The above screenshot is from the upcoming movie, Milk, by Gus Van Sant starring Sean Penn about the man and the events precipitating his death.

LGBT HISTORY: APA's Strange Relationship with LGBT People

1948
Alfred Kinsey publishes Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, the first major sexological research scientific study. Its results challenged the growing conservatism that would define the next 10 years.

1952
Homosexuality is listed in the first DSM as a Sociopathic Personality Disturbance. (I actually didn't know this; the Catholics told me.)

1953
Alfred Kinsey publishes Sexual Behavior in the Human Female, the follow up to his popular 1948 piece. Less successful, and with fewer "wow's." The conservatism had set in, and people were no longer interested in listening.

1957
Evelyn Hooker's paper, "The Adjustment of Male Overt Homosexuals," was published which put psychological tests to both "healthy" homosexuals and heterosexuals. When the results were presented to professionals, they were unable to distinguish between the two groups. The lesson: you can't tell a homo by the psychological profile alone. Bigger message: gays aren't that different.

1968
Homosexuality is moved from sociopathy to "other sexual deviations."

1974
Homosexuality is removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) by the American Psychological Association. It is replaced, instead, by sexual orientation disturbance. The move was credited as the result of three things: 1) Alfred Kinsey, 2) Evelyn Hooker, and 3) the gay rights movement.

1980
Sexual orientation disturbance is replaced in the DSM by "ego-dystonic homosexuality." This is defined (to this day in the ICD-10 by the World Health Organization) as:
The gender identity or sexual preference (heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or prepubertal) is not in doubt, but the individual wishes it were different because of associated psychological and behavioural disorders, and may seek treatment in order to change it.

The ICD-10 (universal medical diagnosis coding system) has a whole section on sexuality, the F66 section. Egodystonic sexual orientation is F66.1. They also have relational and maturational diagnoses.

The argument against this is that homosexuality is egosyntonic -- that is, aligning with the values or beliefs necessary to a person's ego or person's self-image. Seems very personality-based, so I would think it's difficult to make a universal statement there. Especially since anorexia nervosa is considered egosyntonic.

1987
Ego-dystonic homosexuality is removed from the revised DSM, but "sexual disturbance not otherwise specified" persists which is defined as "persistant and marked distress about one's sexual orientation."

2000
The American Psychological Association comes out against reparative/conversion therapy. They find, though there is little evidence either way, that conversion therapy is potentially harmful. From their statement:

In the current social climate, claiming homosexuality is a mental disorder stems from efforts to discredit the growing social acceptance of homosexuality as a normal variant of human sexuality. Consequently, the issue of changing sexual orientation has become highly politicized. The integration of gays and lesbians into the mainstream of American society is opposed by those who fear that such an integration is morally wrong and harmful to the social fabric. The political and moral debates surrounding this issue have obscured the scientific data by calling into question the motives and even the character of individuals on both sides of the issue... Psychotherapeutic modalities to convert or "repair" homosexuality are based on developmental theories whose scientific validity is questionable. Furthermore, anecdotal reports of "cures" are counterbalanced by anecdotal claims of psychological harm. In the last four decades, "reparative" therapists have not produced any rigorous scientific research to substantiate their claims of cure. Until there is such research available, APA recommends that ethical practitioners refrain from attempts to change individuals' sexual orientation, keeping in mind the medical dictum to First, do no harm.

2012
The DSM-V, the latest manual, is due out. They are currently analyzing current diagnoses. There are two that are being challenged this time around:
  • Gender Identity Disorder -- actually listed under a couple of categories. GID is the psychological "disease" necessary to have before undergoing sexual reassignment surgery. It is the only psychological condition that has a surgical cure. Think about that one for a moment.
  • Transvestic Fetishism -- listed as a "paraphilia." This specifically revolves around people who cross -dress and may, in fact, gain sexual arousal out of cross-dressing. People diagnosed with TF would be what we would call "transvestites" or "cross-dressers."
GID Reform Advocates is seeking to either delete or significantly alter both of these diagnoses to "affirm that difference is not disease, nonconformity is not pathology, and uniqueness is not illness...[and] serve a clear therapeutic purpose, are appropriately inclusive, and define disorder on the basis of distress or impairment and not upon social nonconformity."

And that's the whole purpose of this blog... we are gearing up for this one. So, um, yea.

There you go.

LGBT HISTORY: Timeline and LGBT Health

Leave it to Wikipedia to have the most extensive and most up-to-date timeline of LGBT History...

Interesting tidbit, though the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association was founded in 1981, it was not until 2005 that the American Medical Association spoke specifically to their annual conference. Here are Dr. Edward Hill's remarks:
"I know that GLMA members and LGBT physicians have been treated unfairly by the AMA in the past. There is simply no excuse for discriminatory actions or exclusions based on sexual orientation or gender identity -- none." He continued, "First, GLMA has opened [the AMA's] eyes to the diverse needs of LGBT patients, and second -- and just as important -- GLMA has told patients that they have the right to expect a health care system filled with openness, fairness and equality."
Just a little tidbit for today. I'm working on my school's Diversity Week, which happens in November, so I'm trying to find information about culture, religion, sexuality and healthcare. This was one of the first tidbits I had found.

And, I'll post on this later, but make sure you join up the discussion on reforming the American Psychological Association's position on Gender Identity Disorder and Travestic Fetishism for the revised DSM.

LGBT HISTORY: History Quizzes!!!

Searching google for gay history quizzes -- you know me, I love to prove to the world how smart I am -- I stumbled on one of the more unexpected websites and quizzes ever.

BET has a Black & Proud page dealing specifically with LGBT persons of color. (The quiz is really easy -- I got a 100.)

And actually, the coverage is not that bad, and actually has a whole section on black actors who took on gay roles and did not suffer because of it. On the list: Forest Whitaker, Will Smith, Wesley Snipes, Queen Latifah (who is also on all of our list of "needs to come out of the closet and get over herself"), Isaiah Washington, Ving Rhames, and Taye Diggs.

Mmmm... Taye Diggs.

Why is it unexpected? I don't know. I guess, well, I guess that's something wrong with me and my perception of black America, isn't it?

This one (just HTML) is from Out for Equity... I am "Fine!" (No, really, that's the rating)

And, of course, one from PlanetOut. I got a 60 :-(.

And lots of ones from Avert regarding sex, HIV, and all that jazz!!! (Thanks to the hottest gay blogger in the world -- MileHighGayGuy -- isn't that the guy from all the HIV med advertisements???)

And six great ones over at FunTrivia!!!

LGBT HISTORY: A History of the Baths

This is posted specifically for Michi...

Darling, I don't know how accurate this website is, but it gives an interesting overview of the history of bathhouses as a place for gay men to meet and have sex.

For all who don't know, Michi is in grad school at the University of Amsterdam studying the culture of bathhouses ... and is a huge supporter of expanding them further than they are here in the states. I can't say I disagree with her, specifically. (She is also one of the most avid readers of this site.)

More sex is OK with me.*

For those who don't "get" the picture above, the Club brand bathhouse is still around and you may or may not have found me in Club Columbus and/or Club Indianapolis in the last couple of years. That particular flyer is from the 1970s in San Francisco.

Anyways, I thought it was neat.

*As an HIV advocate, I felt it was my duty to include "so long as it was safe," so leaving that little bit out actually makes me shudder a bit. In reality, we should assume that all sex should be safe. I think it's a sign of the times that we still have to remind ourselves that... a condom is important.

LGBT HISTORY: Roman gay marriage

The Christians have nothing on homosexuality and the decline of the Roman Empire, seeing as how they, um, illegalized gay marriage in 342 AD, on the eve of their decline.

Christian Emperors Constantius II and Constans wrote a law that reads like thus:
When a man marries and is about to offer himself to men in womanly fashion [quum vir nubit in feminam viris porrecturam], what does he wish, when sex has lost all its significance; when the crime is one which it is not profitable to know; when Venus is changed to another form; when love is sought and not found? We order the statutes to arise, the laws to be armed with an avenging sword, that those infamous persons who are now, or who hereafter may be, guilty may be subjected to exquisite punishment. (Theodosian Code 9.8.3)
IE: NO HOMOS MARRY.

So, about that whole "acceptance will bring the end of civilization" thing...

LGBT HISTORY: It's happened before... and failed.

In 1912, the Anti-Miscegenation Amendment was introduced which read:

"Intermarriage between negros or persons of color and Caucasians... within the United States... is forever prohibited."

This was around the time the first states were allowing for interracial marriage -- i.e., miscegenation, which was first approved in Massachusetts in 1913.

Does this sound familiar?

"Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."
See, bigots have always tried to limit marriage based on their pre-existing notions of what marriage should and should not be.

Silly bigots.

LGBT HISTORY: 10 years ago today...

Matthew Shephard was found tied to a fence post outside of Laramie, Wyoming, reminding the world just how bad violence against gay persons can be.

He would died a few days later. On my birthday, actually. It was my 16th. I remember it being a big deal in my head, but not in anyone else's.

LGBT HISTORY: Crossdressing through history

I think CNN is secretly celebrating LGBT History Month because there have been a lot of queer-oriented front page news stories lately. Really, watch and you will see. But this is being posted on here as part of my attempt at "teaching" about LGBT History through any source possible during LGBT History Month -- October!! :-)

CNN does a really interesting article on the reasons people have crossdressed throughout history, and, I have to say, they do a damn good job.

Their top five reasons are...

1. To serve in the army -- they quote a number I have never heard, that they had over 400 women serving in the Civil War dressed as men. The most famous, they mention, is Sarah Edmonds/Frank Thompson (pictured below).

2. To maintain royal harmony -- that is, not to cause a scandal or in fighting. Apparently Phillipe I, Duc of Orleans, brother of Louis XIV, was raised as a girl so there wouldn't be any ambition in him. The CNN article does a lot of weird gender stuff with language at this point -- including referring to him as a "girly man" but whatever.

3. To win in the Olympics -- apparently this happens a lot? Controversial gender testing still goes on today, and in the case of Stanis Walasiewicz, she would have been disqualified had they done the testing them. Apparently, she was actually intersexed -- had "ambiguous genitalia." She would not have been allowed to compete.

4. Espionage -- Truly, the story behind the opera, M. Butterfly, about the French diplomat falling in love with a Chinese opera singer who is actually a male. I think it's funny, though, that the opera singer, Shi Pei-Pu (pictured below) named their child "Shi Dudu." LOL Dudu. Sorry, it's late.

5. Fun and Rowdiness -- Apparently there's some "Festival of Fun" in Jodhpur where the women get to "act like men." Unfortunately, I can find almost nothing about it.

I would recommend two more, especially since the last one on the list is lame: religion and dogma, and the theatre! Think Shakespeare!

It's not a bad article, and it's from the excellent website, Mental_Floss which I recommend to all of you as a daily read.

LGBT HISTORY: Gay History Quizzes

Gay.com occasionally has impressive content. Like this month, they have gay history quizzes that you can take!!!
General Knowledge Quiz -- Barry's Score: 8/10
Pride Quiz -- Barry's Score: 5/10 (yea, I blew it)
LGBT African Americans -- Barry's Score: 3/10 (ouch, I'm sorry for my ignorance)
Gay quotes -- Barry's Score: 3/10 (god, I suck)
Advanced Quiz -- Barry's Score: 3/10
Wow, I suck... a LOT. I started strong and got worse and worse... thank god I didn't get to the 1/10 for the final one.

What were your scores???

LGBT HISTORY: Worthless Trivia and GOHI!

Apparently it's not international GLBT History month, it's only national GLBT History Month. See, Britain celebrates it in February. Which is Black History Month here in this country. Inconvenient. Seeing as how October is Black History Month in UK.

I really wish the British and the American minorities would get their history months together.

Um. This should be filed under, "Barry should most definitely not attempt to blog when avoiding homework, watching movies, and drinking."

Oh, and if you are in Columbus, make sure you go out tonight to support GOHI's fundraiser on OSU's campus! GOHI is the Gay Ohio Historical Initiative, which is trying to archive Ohio's Gay History.

Their event tonight is The History of Drag: Remembering the Berwick Ball. I have no idea what the Berwick Ball is. GOHI-- can you fill me in???

It's a great organization, and I've run into them briefly at Dayton's Gay Pride.

Though they never added me to their listserv :-).

LGBT HISTORY: Queers Read This/I Hate Straights

This is probably one of those moving pieces I have ever read. It moved me to call myself queer. I cry everytime I read it for its beauty and anger. It was originally printed in 1990 and has recently found itself a nice little rebirth here on the 'net.

Don't be angry, heterosexuals. It's like the black panther party... it's here for us :-).
How can I tell you. How can I convince you, brother, sister that your life is in danger: That everyday you wake up alive, relatively happy, and a functioning human being, you are committing a rebellious act. You as an alive andfunctioning queer are a revolutionary.

There is nothing on this planet that validates, protectsor encourages your existence. It is a miracle you are standing here reading these words. You should by all rights be dead. Don't be fooled, straight people own the world andthe only reason you have been spared is you're smart, lucky or a fighter.

Straight people have a privilege that allows them to do whatever they please and fuck without fear. But not only do they live a life free of fear; they flaunt their freedom inmy face. Their images are on my TV, in the magazine I bought, in the restaurant I want to eat in, and on thestreet where I live. I want there to be a moratorium onstraight marriage, on babies, on public displays ofaffection among the opposite sex and media images that promote heterosexuality. Until I can enjoy the same freedomof movement and sexuality, as straights, their privilegemust stop and it must be given over to me and my queer sisters and brothers. Straight people will not do this voluntarily and so they must be forced into it. Straights must be frightened into it. Terrorized into it. Fear is the most powerful motivation. No one will give us what wedeserve. Rights are not given they are taken, by force ifnecessary. It is easier to fight when you know who your enemy is. Straight people are your enemy. They are your enemy
when they don't acknowledge your invisibility andcontinue to live in and contribute to a culture that killsy ou. Every day one of us is taken by the enemy. Whether it's an AIDS death due to homophobic government inaction or a lesbian bashing in an all-night diner (in a supposedly lesbian neighborhood).

AN ARMY OF LOVERS CANNOT LOSE

Being queer is not about a right to privacy; it is about the reedom to be public, to just be who we are. It means everyday fighting oppression; homophobia, racism, misogyny, the bigotry of religious hypocrites and our own self-hatred.(We have been carefully taught to hate ourselves.) And now of course it means fighting a virus as well, and all those homo-haters who are using AIDS to wipe us off the face ofthe earth. Being queer means leading a different sort of life. It's not about the mainstream, profit-margins,patriotism, patriarchy or being assimilated. It's not about executive directors, privilege and elitism. It's about being on the margins, defining ourselves; it's about gender-fuck and secrets, what's beneath the belt and deep insidethe heart; it's about the night. Being queer is "grassroots" because we know that everyone of us, every body, every cunt, every heart and ass and dick is a world ofpleasure waiting to be explored. Everyone of us is a world of infinite possibility. We are an army because we have to be. We are an army because we are so powerful. (We have so much to fight for; we are the most precious of endangered species.) And we are an army of lovers because it is we whoknow what love is. Desire and lust, too. We invented them.We come out of the closet, face the rejection of society, face firing squads, just to love each other! Every time we fuck, we win. We must fight for ourselves (no one else isgoing to do it) and if in that process we bring greater freedom to the world at large then great. (We've given somuch to that world: democracy, all the arts, the concepts of love, philosophy and the soul, to name just a few giftsfrom our ancient Greek Dykes, Fags.) Let's make every spacea Lesbian and Gay space. Every street a part of our sexual geography. A city of yearning and then total satisfaction.A city and a country where we can be safe and free and more.We must look at our lives and see what's best in them, seewhat is queer and what is straight and let that straight chaff fall away! Remember there is so, so little time. And I want to be a lover of each and every one of you. Next year, we march naked.

The full text is here, and a great analysis of it as a manifesto can be found on this now defunct blog.

LGBT HISTORY: Identities

Yea! Semi-original content!

In this blog, we're going to be covering the various terms people use to delineate their sexual and gender idenities and maybe some historical context. Most of the information is gleaned from various sources, including the urban dictionary and wikipedia.

"Alphabet Soup"
There are so many, that I wanted to just put this first and out there because you will hear me use these terms. The CDC, in all its wisdom, put together a rubric to describe sexual behaviors independent of identity in order to better gauge homosexual behavior. "M" means man, "W" means woman, and "S" mean "who has sex with." So, easy ones: MSM (man who has sex with men), WSW (woman who has sex with women), MSW (man who has sex with women), and WSM (woman who has sex with men). But there are more that have popped up too: MSMNGI (man who has sex with men, not gay identified), MSMPC (men who have sex with men in particular circumstances), and BMSR (black man at sexual risk) are the three that come to mind. Then, of course, you have the craiglist alphabet soup: m4m (men for men), m4w (men for women), w4m (women for men), w4w (women for women), mw4m (man/woman for men), etc. There's lots of letters. You will primarily hear me say MSM if ever I use any of these.

Asexual
Someone who has no sexual attraction to any sex. There's a great blog blogrolled here called Asexual Explorations.

Bear
A bear is a stocky, mostly hairy, gay man. Think Al Borland (from Home Improvement) and you have the penultimate bear. There's a whole culture, which is sometimes tied in with leather culture, including magazines, porn labels, contests, "bear runs" (festivals/mini-prides), etc. etc. etc. I once thought I was a bear cub. The reason for the name? Some sort of theoretical similarity in body type -- fat but powerful, and hairy. Yup, that's about it. Oh, and the ideal is the stereotypical, blue-collar American boy. Always a lot of boots, and cowboy hats. A lot of "woof"ing happens at bear events, too, which doesn't make any sense to me because bears don't woof. There's lot of subdivisions too:

  • admirer -- someone who likes bears (sometimes called a chaser)
cub -- young or younger looking bear
goldilocks -- the fag hag of a bear (as seen on TV with Kathy Griffin!)
otter -- man with hair, but generally leaner or more muscular
panda bear -- Asian bear, often not hairy
polar bear -- white haired bear
wolf -- lean, muscular guy who is often found in the company of bears

Bottom
Receiver in anal intercourse (primarily, though can be used in conjunction with other terms like "WS bottom" or "BDSM" bottom to demarcate the "receiver" or "passive" position). Like the term top, this is listed here because it is often used to elaborate on someone's gender expression in conjunction with other terms -- "femme bottom" or "butch bottom." The bottom is often viewed as the "gay" position, as "receiving" cannot be construed as something a "straight-identified" person would do.

Chicken
Opposite the vulture (or the pederast, or the chicken hawk), a young boy looking to be, looking like he could be, or being "snatched up" by an older gay man.

Down-Low
There are lots and lots of famous writers who write about this -- but the predominate one is J.L. King who wrote the book On the Down Low. It also gained popular appeal when Oprah talked about it. This describes black and Hispanic men (primarily) who have sex with other men but identify as straight and do not talk about their male sexual partners at all. It is identified as an HIV-risk. Humourously, by identifying as "downlow," you are no longer on "the down low" because, by definition, you are now talking about it. Duh. I think this is a racist and homophobic term, ultimately, because it creates sexual predators out of black men and turns homosexuality into an evil. Moreso, when white guys do this -- and they do, quite a bit -- we think it's funny and call them three beer queers. Term has roots back to the 1930s, gained mass market appeal in the 2003-2006 era.

Drag
Two predominate uses: drag queen (male who dresses as a female) and drag king (female who dresses as a male). Overwhelmingly, the term "drag queen" and "drag king" are used for performance dress in the popular lexicon. A transvestite, then, is not a drag queen, while John Travolta in Hairspray would be considered a man in drag (though not, I might add, a drag queen). There is some that say this term is Shakespearean, others who say that it originates from the 1920s. The term comes from the abbreviation of the phrase "dressed as girl;" there is another phrase, drab from "dressed as boy," but "drab king" doesn't sound all that fun.

Dyke
Very obscure reference, like faggot, but all seem to agree that its a shortened version of bulldyke, which has had a variety of meanings throughout history. It, like the term "queer" is becoming increasing popular.

Ex-Gay/Yestergay
Someone who has gone through the process of "coming out of homosexuality" by various reparative therapies. Mostly debunked in mainstream psychology, though it has grown in terms of numbers and mainstream interest. Generally accepted as false and psychologically damaging. Several prominent political figures think it's nifty though. Just because you suppress something doesn't mean you aren't.

Ex-Ex-Gay
Someone who went through reparative therapy and then realized what a crock of shit it was and came back. There is an excellent blog that I hope will become reactive called Chronicles of an Ex-Ex-Gay. And he's really cute.

Fag Hag
Preferred term: fruit fly. A straight woman who prefers the company of gay men. There's a lot of jokes and psychology that can go into this one, but I'm not going to talk about it too much. The girls in the club are fabulous and keep their boys in line. Though, all too often, they get left when we have our tricks :-).

Fag Stag
A straight man who prefers the company of gay men. Yea, we can all make the jokes.

Faggot
Pejorative for a gay man. There seem to be a few possible sources:

  1. "Faggot" from the British meaning "a bundle of sticks" -- a reference to a burning at the stake.
  2. "Faggot" from the British meaning an "old or unpleasant woman." Ms. Chanak, um, what? LOL
  3. "Faygele" from the Yiddish meaning "little bird."
  4. Obscure British reference referring to a man brought into military service basically as a place holder.

Obscure history, but the first literary documentations go back to 1914.

Friend of Dorothy
Old-ish term that is "code" for gay. Dorothy, as in from the Wizard of Oz, was Judy Garland who was seen as a gay icon. Her death may have been one of the many sparks that began the Stonewall Rebellion. No, really. So, now, thanks to dear Judy, we are all friends of Dorothy.

Gay
Primarily, a male who has sex with other men who identifies with the "gay community." In recent years, it has become more salient to use this describe people who are identifiably gay, that is, they call themselves as such. The separation of terms of "gay as men who have sex with men" and "gay as people who are part of the gay community" is relatively recent and represents a move away from centralized gay community. Sometimes, though far less commonly, used as "gay woman." It is likely the term arises from the word "gay" meaning carefree, which became construed as "without moral constraints" which ultimately was sexualized.

Homosexual
Until the gay rights movement began, this was considered the proper term for both the identity and the behavior of same-sex behavior. It fell out of vogue in the 1960s and 1970s as an identifier because it was seen as too clinical. "Gay" and "lesbian" replaced it as a means of claiming the identity. Now it is used primarily to describe behavior -- sex with a person of the same sex.

Homophile
The original alternative to homosexual, coined by a German (those Germans and the sex thing!!!!) and chosen, originally, because the -phile ending gives preference of love over sex. A lot of original LGBT organizations referred to themselves as homophiliac throughout the 1950s and 1960s. If someone called you a homophile these days, you're likely to think that you're being called a fag. Wikipedia reports that this is being used by hate and anti-gay groups, these days, to linke homosexuality and pedophilia. Oh, you crazy anti-gay's.

Intersexed
Contemporary term for the medical condition known as hermaphroditism, used in modern rhetoric as an identity that some people take on to represent a new point on the gender/sexuality spectrum.

Lesbian
A woman who has sex with women -- but not necessarily exclusively. In my experience, this is used by women who identify as having a primary attraction to women, or who are in a current relationship with women. In that way, it describes behavior. It also attaches them to their female-centered relationship needs. Originates from the Greek island of Lesbos.

LGBT
L
esbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans. Sometimes modified to be GLBT, or LGBTQ (Q=queer or questioning), or LGBTS (S=straight), or LGBTQS, or LGBTTTQS (T=transgendered, transvestite, and transsexual), LGBTTs (Ts=two spirit), LGBTU (U=unsure), or LGBTQI (I=intersex)... then you could sometimes throw an "A" on there for "allies." For simplicity, this blog uses LGBT. Used to replace "gay community" starting in the 1990s because the latter term was not felt to be inclusive enough. Began as "lesbian and gay," then "LGB," became "LGBT," and is starting to become "LGBTQ" as the term "queer" is becoming more acceptable. Yea, I know, there's a lot, but there's two other fun ones as reported by Wikipedia (the source of all information in the known universe):

  • MSGI = minority sexual and gender identities
FABGLITTER = (fetish, allies, bisexual, gay, lesbian, intersexed, transsexual, transgendered engendering revolution)

Pederast
An older man who "guides" a younger man into the coming of age, from the Greek paiderastia. It was a very popular Greek form of socialization, and it did involve sexual favors. The term "pederasty" pops up occasionally in European and American law throughout history, especially in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. We also call these men "vultures" or "sugar daddies."

Queen
An effeminant gay man or a gay man who has a specialized quality (i.e., "rice queen" is a gay man who prefers Asians; "bean queen" is a gay man who prefers Hispanics; "piss queen" is a gay man who prefers WS). Also used in conjunction with "drag."

Queer
You're about to get a whole post on this one, so, just wait...

Same-Sex Loving
This is a relatively new term and one that caught me off guard when I first heard -- also interchangeable with "same-gender loving." I think it's a creation of the black community's unwillingness to accept the term gay which has racial and classist connotations. It's a new take on the idea.

Sapphist
Term originating from the Greek poet Sappho, who wrote beautiful love stories that were sexually explicit towards other women who stayed on her island of ... get this ... Lesbos. Term used to describe lesbians, though rarely. More commonly used as an adjective, "Sapphic."

Sodomist
From the Biblical town of Sodom, which some claim was destroyed by God due to their homosexual and unnatural sexual acts (that's not true, actually, but whatever). Until recently "sodomy laws" were common in America (all of them struck down in 2003 as an unnatural invasion of privacy in Lawrence and Garner v. Texas) and covered, universally, homosexual acts but also included oral sex between heterosexual partners. Very common use of the term dating back to the BC times.

Top
Inserter in anal intercourse (primarily, can sometimes be used in relation to other things, like "WS top," or "BDSM top" in which case it demarcates the "giver" or the "dominate" position). It is listed here because top and bottom (see above) are often used in context with other words, like "femme" or "butch" to elaborate on their gender expression. Often viewed as the more "masculine" of positions. Moreso, like pre-gay rights days, the top can sometimes be construed as the "not gay" person as they are not receiving.

Transgender
Someone who feels that they are a different gender than their sex represents.

Transsexual
Someone who undergoes the surgery to alter their sex to align with their proper gender.

Transvestite
A person who dresses in the alternate sex for the purpose of personal enjoyment or pleasure. Most of these are straight men -- the stereotypical "husband in the wife's panties" situation. This is not, necessarily, a drag queen.

Tribade
Old, old, old term used for lesbians from the term tribadism, which is the act of female-to-female intercourse where the two women would rub their vulvae together via a scissor position of the legs. I have never heard this used in a modern context.

Twink
Imagine my shock when I found this term actually comes from the junk food twinkie. This is probably the funniest and most enlightening Wikipedia entry I have ever read:

The term's namesake is the "golden-colored phallic-shaped snack cake" Hostess Twinkie, commonly regarded as the quintessential junk food: "little nutritional value, sweet to the taste and creme-filled."[10][11][12] The Twinkie was invented in 1930 and originally contained a banana cream filling, but this was replaced with a vanilla cream filling during a banana shortage caused by World War II.[13][14][12] By the 1950s, "Twinkies had become a school lunchbox staple".[12] The original flavor was re-introduced as an alternative flavor in 2007.[15] A twink is "memorable for his outer packaging", not his "inner depth".[11] The golden-color also referred to those who are tanned from too much time in the sun.[16] The junk food reference has a number of connotations, including a perceived lack of intelligence and being ideal only for a short term, but not having lasting qualities or being very healthy.[16] Most of these concerns no longer apply, as the definition of twink has broadened, and qualifiers (such as muscle or femme) narrow the meaning to a more specific type of twink.[16]
Although the term originated from the American snack food, both the cake and twink have found international use, with Hostess selling "more than half a billion Twinkies" yearly.[10][17][15]

If you ignore that they are talking about the Twinkie, and are talking about a Twink... you understand perfectly what they are talking about. LOL -- "banana cream filling." (also reports that it's a backronym meaning "teenage, white, into no kink.")

Uranian
A German term from the 19th century, originally used to describe the "third sex" of men who have a female psyche (and, thus, have sex with men). Later used to describe women who have sex with women. I have never heard this used in a modern context. HAHA, but I think it's funny that the term, broken down, means "relating to Uranus" (say it outloud).

Other cultural specific terms: poof (British), hijra (Arabic), two-spirit (American Indian). All of them mean gay. :-)

I think I'm mostly done with this. I got most of the big ones out of the way, and some of the little ones. If you need me to tell you what "bi-curious" means (and the crock of shit it may or may not be), well, then, you can always wiki it!
