The sign is literally true, because civil and political rights are a class of rights and freedoms that protect individuals from the government and state power and assure the ability to participate in the civil and political life of the state.
So we have those rights because we're citizens, regardless of our orientation.
However, I don't know who posted the sign nor what their agenda is, so sadly I have to assume assholes paid for it and that the sign makes me really, really angry.
I say bullshit... how's that for my $.02 of discussion? haha
Another vote for "bullshit."
Goblinbox, the sign is completely untrue because people are denied civil and political rights due to their orientation and therefore suppressed by the government and state power. Orientation does affect the ability to participate in the civil and political life of the state.
Orientation affects a persons ability to fully engage in armed forces or at least creates a separate set of rules for them hence not allowing them to be a full citizen.
Orientation affects a persons ability to be a full Civil servant. The partner of a same sex oriented civil servant not being able to enjoy in the same benefits of the partner of an opposite sex oriented civil servant affects or at least adds exclusivity (excluding gays) and does not allow gays the right to enjoy the benefits of being a full citizen of our government and state. It encourages the exclusion of them from lawmaking and therefore leaves political, civil, and state power in the hands of heterosexual people.
Gay rights are 100% civil rights.
how is the right to marry, the right to not be fired because of your class or status, the right to not be denied public accommodation because of your class or status, and the right to not be denied housing because of your class or status, not civil rights commensurate with other recognized civil rights?
I'm not sure I even understand what is meant by "political rights?"
There are no words to describe how awful that is.
