The majority of the Cuban-American community actually supported the prior policy....

Not that I do.

Cigars for everyone! Monica Lewinsky too!

Wouldn't it be something if Castro came for a visit.

Castro is a monster (both of them).

I can understand some people's deep seated hatred but the best thing we can do in our foreign policy, especially with our neighbors in the western hemisphere, is just engage them in communication and trade.

Yes, I agree in constructive engagement, but we must always call evil by its name. In addition to being a ruthless dictator who has impoverished his people and stifled any opposition, Fidel was/is a major homophobe who has brutally repressed gays and those suffering with HIV/AIDS. Until proven otherwise, one can only assume it runs in his family.

Mariela Castro, Fidel's niece and daughter of Raul Castro, is an outspoken lesbian activist in Cuba. From this article:

Because of Ms. Castro's efforts, the Public Health Ministry in Cuba recently approved regulations that would allow free sex-change operations and counseling and support programs for trans-gendered people have been in place for sometime now in Cuba.

She has also started serious dialogue on same-sex unions in Cuba. In February of this year, leading Cuban politicians welcomed her proposals to allow gay and lesbian marriage rights.

The Cuban culture minister Abel Preito, who is also a member of the powerful Politburo of the Communist party and the Council of State, Cuba's supreme governing body said, "I think that marriage between lesbians, between homosexuals can be perfectly approved and that in Cuba that wouldn’t cause an earthquake or anything like that."

Ricardo Alarcon, president of Cuba's National Assembly said, "We have to abolish any form of discrimination against those persons (LGBT's)... We are trying to see how to do that, whether it should be to grant them the right to marry or to have same-sex unions."
