A Question for Maine

A question for the people who want to put the same-sex marriage bill on the ballot as a referendum:
What if you lose this time?
If we win the referendum, do you realize the message you send? That is, the people voted for it. Is that really what you want to do? Imagine the Vermont/Iowa effect times like 100. It's not the courts, it's not a rogue executive, it's not even the pesky legislators voting for it...

If we win the referendum, the people support same-sex marriage. You might as well pack your bags and go home, at that point.

Granted, it would be a small victory, but it would be a symbolic one.
